CAMBRIDGE, MA , 2025Datawheel and Cape Fear Collective (CFC) are proud to announce a major expansion of the Healthy Communities NC platform, launching 170 new data profiles covering every State Senate and State House District in North Carolina.

With this update, the platform becomes an even stronger resource for data-driven decision-making, ensuring that every legislative district has access to the public health, economic, and social data necessary to drive equitable change.

Revolutionizing Public Health Data

While health data is often aggregated at the county or state level, community needs rarely follow those exact boundaries. Healthy Communities NC bridges this gap by mapping indicators directly to legislative districts.

"Healthy Communities NC has revolutionized how we view public health data in the state, directly influencing real decisions," said Dante Haywood, Director of Science at Cape Fear Collective. "By collaborating with communities and leveraging data science, we are turning insights into action, helping leaders make better decisions to address inequities in health, housing, education, and economic opportunity."

A Partnership Driven by Mission The platform’s success stems from a unique collaboration model. It was developed by Datawheel, a digital transformation agency, and powered by the strategic vision of Cape Fear Collective.

“At Datawheel, we work hand in hand with organizations like Cape Fear Collective, ensuring that every platform we develop is tailored to their mission, audience, and goals,” said Alex Simoes, Co-Founder & CTO of Datawheel. “We bring expertise in technology and data visualization, while they bring deep domain knowledge. Together, we create tools that don't just display data, but turn insights into real-world action.”

Why Hyper-Local Data Matters: Supported by Novant Health, Community Care of North Carolina, the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, the new profiles address three critical needs:

  • Fueling Change: Providing the baseline data necessary to design smarter, evidence-based policies.

  • Creating Clarity: Democratizing access to information so that both elected officials and residents are looking at the same facts.

  • Advancing Equity: Highlighting specific pockets of need that are often masked by broader county-level averages.
